Streptococcus pneumoniae

Infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common reason for an ear infection to occur. However, this bacteria can also bring on a variety of other medical conditions. Some of those are mentioned briefly on this page.

Pneumonia

This illness affects the lungs, and is inflammatory in nature. It is often caused by the bacteria in question, however, it can also be due to other things such as viral, fungal, or parasitic infection -- and even other reasons beyond these. Breathing difficulty is a common finding in people with pneumonia. Coughing is also frequently seen. A high fever may affect the patient. Cyanosis may take place. Nausea and vomiting are a couple of the other potential symptoms.

A doctor or other professional may use X-rays in the diagnosis process when pneumonia is suspected. Blood tests are one of the other possible tools to be used. There are some medical conditions that have similar presentations to pneumonia, and may need to be ruled out (or, diagnosed, if that is the case). COPD is one of these possibilities. That name is short for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The term describes a situation where emphysema and chronic bronchitis occur together.

Pericarditis

This condition is also caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, and other things including viral infections can also be behind it. It is when inflammation affects the sac around the heart which is called the pericardium. Chest pain is something that is frequently found amongst patients who have pericarditis. Coughing may also occur. The patient might have a fever. Exhaustion is another symptom that may impact a person with this condition.

There are different treatment methods that are available. To an extent, the treatment that is preferred may vary based on the severity. Certain medications are often used. A procedure known as pericardiocentesis may be performed in some severe cases, as may be surgery, although infrequently.
